1st Open Field Day dedicated to ARRA seedless grapes

On 26th August, 2011 the first Open Field Day, organized in Apulia (Italy) by A.V.I. Srl and GRAPA Varieties Ltd, took place in order to show the first results on the growing of the new assortment of ARRA seedless table grape varietal selections.

The ‘ARRAs’ are the result of various decades of experimentation and development by Mr. Shachar Karniel (ARD-Agricultural Research Development director) and Mr. Sal Giumarra. The Karniel family has always been devoted to the growing and development of seedless table grape varieties (also called ‘apirene’).

The owner of the grapes is Bakersfield (California)-based Giumarra family – from who the nickname ARRA was derived. GRAPA Varieties Ltd (a company set up by Karniel family, already owner of Early Sweet variety) is the exclusive worldwide distributor of all ARRA varieties.

A.V.I. Srl, a partnership between two important Italian import-export companies (Dr. Rino Storelli Srl and R.K.M Srl), holds the exclusive distribution and marketing in Europe of the new registered ARRA varieties and those sorted and registered in the next 30 years. The trial fields in Europe at the moment are located in Apulia (where A.V.I. works together Orchidea Frutta and Caputo farms) and in Sicily (where A.V.I. works together CO.RA. farm).

The sole nursery authorized to sell and propagate ARRA varieties is VITROPLANT Italia Srl. Mr. Gerardo Grilli is the Sales Manager.

Goals and results of the project

Thanks to the partnership with GRAPA Varieties, A.V.I. intends to bring to Italy and Europe a proper revolution in the field of vine-growing destined to the fresh market. Among the fixed goals, most of which have already been achieved, there is the production of grape characterized by:

•lower need of manual work;

•lower production/phytosanitary costs;

•production/quality advantages;

•marketing advantages.

As Rino Storelli, A.V.I. chairman, explained to FreshPlaza: “It was showed not only fortitude to organize a such event focused on innovation, in a period of crisis such as now. There is a deeper reason which pushes us to go on with our project, that is to offer marketing protection to the producer, strengthening him and to bring him back to a normal table grapes market. To that end A.V.I. will try to find the marketing place of produce before its planning in the fields. In this way it’s the demand that modulates the supply and not the other way around!”

It is no accident that the major chains of big retail were invited to the event. Eurospin and Megamark (Selex) attended it.

Who can plant these new varieties and how?

From now on, every interested farm can sign a contract for planting ARRA grapes, in obedience of following obligations:

1.payment of planting royalty to GRAPA Varieties Ltd ($ 1.000 per hectare);

2.payment of varietal royalty to GRAPA Varieties Ltd (5% of FOT/FOB price);

3.exclusive marketing through the central sales office of A.V.I. Srl.

Among the A.V.I. activities there will be also the legal protection of varietal property to safeguard the interests of all producers involved in the project, the only ones authorized to produce ARRA varieties. A.V.I. legal department will report to authorities those who grow without the necessary contract.

On 31st December, 2010 the tolerance deadline for illegal growing of licensed varieties expired. Therefore, from 1 January, 2011 those who grow licensed varieties illegally, if traced will enter automatically in the “Black List”. This can lead to not being allowed to be an official supplier for big retail any more.

All those interested to the contract for planting ARRA grapes are invited to contact first Mr. Maurizio Simone, manager of A.V.I. agronomic department, and then the lawyer Davide Storelli (A.V.I. legal department). The contract is drawn-up in English.
